Leanne’s interest in art started while
watching her mother make crafts with her
kids dubbed the ‘Cleaver club’. Therefore,
at a young age, Leanne learned to sew,
cross-stitch and latch hook. She made
Nativity sets with scrap material and
toilet paper rolls, Christmas trees with tin
foil, and “the most perfect God’s-eye” ever
produced by a kindergartener, according to
her teacher. Leanne’s grandmother taught
her to crochet, resulting in a truly hideous
blanket made from scraps of yarn that had
no business being thrown together, but it
was warm and she loved it anyway. Fast
forward past high school, college, marriage,
two kids, divorce, much soul-searching and
the resultant need to do anything to keep
her hands out of the cupboard when the
munchies struck in the evening. Seeing the
gorgeous items being produced through knit
and crochet by her youngest sister, Pam,
Leanne decided it was time to take on a
hobby that could satisfy her creative
cravings while avoiding her chocolate
ones. Pam got her started making a poncho
for her daughter, and the obsession began.
Now fast forward another five years.
Leanne’s family is drowning in hats,
scarves and blankets and screaming for
mercy. But she’s addicted. And she’s
discovered craft store coupons. Pam once
again comes to the rescue and introduces
her to Amigurumi – the Japanese art of
knitting or crocheting small stuffed
animals and anthropomorphic creatures.
Not much time and thousands of patterns
later, Leanne’s kids had far too many little
stuffed creatures. So, deciding amigurumi’
s are too cute not to share, Leanne formed
Twysted Syster Creations (a shout-out to
Pam and also to sister Crissie, a creative
genius who was also beginning an obsession
with textiles). Now, the sky’s the limit,
and Leanne will not rest until everyone has
been blessed with her unique, fun twysts
